Knowing two languages has many benefits that extend beyond mere fluency in communication. It opens doors to new cultures, enhances cognitive abilities, and boosts career prospects. This is something that my mother always told me, and I Working as a Paralegal for so many years knew, I mean I was their favorite because I understood and Spoke both languages. (Spanish & English to be Exact)
There was one time that I was in a government agency Government trying to get some stuff sorted, But they only assisted people by their ticket number. My number has been called - unfortunately, I was in the bathroom with my child - that of course - he needed to use the bathroom at the right moment when I didn't want him to. I went to the window that my number had been called. She was already assisting someone else. I stayed behind, not close I wanted to invade nobody's privacy and business. The agent was super rude and told me "YOU HAVE TO WAIT FOR YOUR NUMBER TO BE CALLED - GO SIT DOWN" "I know - I was in the bathroom when you called my number and I just have one quick question." "NO, YOUR NUMBER WILL BE CALL AGAIN - SIT" "Yes, My number will be called again when you reach 100 and Im 14"
There was a chair right by her window - the person who was sitting there moved - and I sat right there - my thoughts was once she was finished with that person, before she call someone else I will go to her. While I was sitting there and just awkwardly over that direction I saw that the person that she was assisting needed help - she only spoke Spanish, and the agent English - they could not find a translator in that office - that poor woman looked overwhelmed looking for a good samaritan to help her.
There - I saw my opportunity - a light bolt turned on, one of those "I HAVE AN IDEA MOMENTS" - Hey Do you need help? She was like Yes Please. I came over - and the agent was like oh you know Spanish too - Small world. I help that lady with everything that she needed translation with. Everyone was happy - (Even though I was doing it because I wanted her to see me, I would have help her no matter the circumstances). Finally, the agent asked what do you need with? She was like I was so rude to you and you came and help - I wish the world would have more people like you. "Umm Thank you!" "Just give me what I need" I didn't say that, I just smiled. Like Bitch WTF! Excuse my Language. I got help - she went above and beyond to help me and did more than I was expecting. She humiliated me at the beginning but Karma got to her. "Like there is no need to be Rude".
This is a true story that happens, but know more than one language doesn't matter which ones fosters a sense of cultural appreciation. It allows you to dive headfirst into the traditions, literature, and art of another community, broadening your perspective and promoting cross-cultural understanding.
Moreover, studies have shown that bilingualism positively impacts cognitive development. The constant switching between languages stimulates the brain, increasing multitasking abilities, problem-solving skills, and even delaying the onset of cognitive decline in old age. Additionally, speaking two languages can open up exciting career opportunities.
In today's globalized world, employers highly value individuals who can effectively navigate diverse markets and communicate with international clients. Bilingualism can provide a competitive edge, boosting your chances of landing prestigious job positions and expanding career prospects. So, whether it's for personal growth, cognitive enhancement, or professional success, embracing the benefits of knowing two languages brings you not only linguistic fluency but a whole world of opportunities waiting to be explored.
