This past weekend, I embarked on an adventure that had been a long time coming: apple picking and tasting apple cider for the very first time. Despite seeing countless bottles of apple cider at the supermarket, I’d never felt compelled to try it. But after a wave of enthusiasm on social media, with friends praising both cold and hot apple cider, I knew it was time to give it a shot. As they say, you never know until you try!
We chose a family-friendly farm for our outing, perfect for late October. I bundled up my kids in warm clothes and boots—after all, it was a farm! Upon arrival, their excitement was palpable. We took a ton of pictures, capturing the beautiful autumn backdrop and our eager faces.
Pricing and Activities
We purchased our bags for apple picking, which cost $62 for a family of five, and an additional $17 for an extra bag since we were a family of six. To me, this seemed a bit on the pricier side, especially considering the extra costs for activities. The hayride was another $8 per person (free for my 3-year-old), and I was hoping for a little more from the experience. The ride was enjoyable for the kids, but I anticipated more decorations and perhaps some Halloween-themed flair to really set the mood.
The hayride took us to the pumpkin patch, where we snapped a few more pictures, and while it also offered access to a corn maze, that required an additional ticket. Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough cash for the maze, which felt a bit disappointing. I think it would have been better if the corn maze was included in the hayride ticket, especially since the ride itself felt rather short.
The Apple Picking Experience
Once back at the farm, it was finally time for the main event: apple picking! We decided to rent a wagon for $10, which turned out to be one of our best decisions of the day. The walk to the apple trees was about ten minutes, but the anticipation made it feel much shorter.
Now, let me be honest: I’m not usually a fan of apples, apple juice, or apple pie. However, there was something special about these apples. The aroma of fresh apples and cinnamon brought back warm memories, especially since I love that combination in the wax melts I sell. We brought water and wipes, and decided to snack on some apples as we picked. Oh my goodness! Those were hands down the best apples I have ever tasted. They were juicy and crisp, unlike any apple I’d ever eaten. We devoured about four apples each as we filled our bags and wagon, and the kids were having the time of their lives.
The Culinary Finale: Apple Cider
After a successful picking session, we headed over to explore the food section. However, I was shocked to find that a single hotdog cost $7! No thanks—we opted for a nearby restaurant that offered healthier and more affordable options.
But I couldn’t leave without trying apple cider. I started with the cold version, and wow, it was refreshing! The taste was a wonderful blend of sweet and tart, a delightful contrast to the overly sweet apple juices I was used to. I was pleasantly surprised.
Then I had to try the hot apple cider, and let me tell you, it was pure magic! The warmth of cinnamon and apple enveloped me like a cozy blanket. It was the perfect seasonal drink, bursting with rich flavors that felt like a hug from the inside.
Would I Do It Again?
Reflecting on the day, I can confidently say that apple picking and tasting apple cider was an experience worth having. The joy on my kids' faces, the incredible flavors, and the sense of adventure made it memorable. They’re already asking to go apple picking again next year, and I can’t wait to join them. But this time I will make sure that I bring them early in the season and to a better farm!
Now What am I going to do with all the apple that we collected: I have look for some apple cider recipes to do at home. Stay tune for that...
So, if you’ve been on the fence about apple picking or apple cider, I wholeheartedly recommend giving it a try. You never know what delightful surprises await!
