The Love-Hate Relationship with Airbnb: A Traveler’s Perspective

Let's Talk About Air BnB

Airbnb has transformed the way we travel, offering unique accommodations and a sense of home while away. As a parent, I initially embraced the platform for its family-friendly options. However, my experience has become a mixed bag of love and frustration. Here’s why I adore Airbnb, and why I’m leaning toward traditional hotels for future trips.

Why I Love Airbnb?

Traveling with kids can be a challenge, but Airbnb makes it easier to keep everyone together. Having a whole house or apartment means we can enjoy family time without the hassle of cramming into a hotel room. The amenities—like kitchens, laundry facilities, and outdoor spaces—are lifesavers, especially with babies and toddlers in tow. It’s so much more convenient to prepare meals and manage nap schedules in a comfortable setting.

When I first started using Airbnb, the prices were incredibly affordable. Renting a house with a pool often cost less than staying in a hotel. Plus, not having to share amenities like a pool or a common area felt like a major bonus for our family.

Why I Hate It?

However, my love for Airbnb has begun to wane. Over the years, prices have skyrocketed, often exceeding the cost of a five-star hotel. For large families, this shift can make travel prohibitively expensive.

Then there’s the cleaning fee. What used to be a reasonable charge has ballooned to $200 or more, which feels excessive. It’s frustrating to pay a hefty fee only to be expected to leave the place spotless for the next guests. If I’m covering a cleaning fee, shouldn’t I be able to enjoy my vacation without worrying about chores?

This brings me to the atmosphere of relaxation. Staying in a hotel typically offers a sense of peace. I don’t have to fret over broken dishes or misplaced items. After all, if a cup breaks, I’d rather not face the anxiety of being charged an exorbitant fee. And the omnipresent cameras in many Airbnb properties can feel intrusive, especially when I’m with my children. While I understand safety concerns, it’s unsettling to think about surveillance, especially when my kids are in their swimsuits.

I don’t want to completely write off Airbnb. There are still unique and memorable experiences to be had. I’ve enjoyed staying in charming homes that reflect the local culture, and there’s a certain joy in exploring neighborhoods from a residential perspective. I think the key moving forward will be to strike a balance—perhaps choosing Airbnb for shorter trips where we can enjoy the unique qualities, while opting for hotels for longer vacations where relaxation and convenience take priority.

The Bottom Line

Despite having five-star ratings for all my Airbnb bookings and never encountering major issues, I’m realizing that the charm of vacationing in a home may not outweigh the stress it can bring. The convenience of hotel services—cleaning, meals, and a more relaxed environment—are increasingly appealing.

As I look ahead to future travels, I find myself longing for a vacation experience where I can focus on making memories with my family, free from the burdens of cleaning and upkeep. Perhaps it’s time to embrace the simplicity and ease that hotels can provide. After all, a vacation should be about relaxation, not chores.
